Dynamo was retained to complete a scoping study to evaluate possible designs and recommend a path forward. In addition to the generator replacement, Plains Midstream also wanted the ability to place one of their 2.4 kV, 300 HP cooling water pumps on the new emergency generator system without making changes to their existing emergency electrical bus.
Due to this requirement, Dynamo recommended upgrading to a 2.4 kV emergency generator and associated switchgear. It was also determined that the generator system would need to be housed in a new building. This solution allowed for all the new equipment to be relocated into one enclosure which proved to be the best alternative for both cost and functionality.
The recommended preliminary design was approved by the client, and Dynamo was commissioned to supply a turnkey project. The supply, delivery, and installation of the major components, including the cable trays, cables, E-House, switchgear, and generator, were completed before the scheduled facility outage. These activities accounted for the majority of the work and minimized the negative impacts of the plant’s downtime, allowing for a quick turnaround. Of particular relevance, a self-framer skid-mounted building was supplied and successfully integrated into the overall project.
