PROJECT SUMMARY:

Yara Belle Plaine Inc is a fertilizer manufacturer based in Regina, Saskatchewan and is part of the Yara International group of companies. It is one of the largest North American manufacturers of granular urea, anhydrous ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate in North America. The Belle Plaine facility is currently the largest consumer of natural gas in the province of Saskatchewan.

Dynamo was originally retained by Yara to perform a scoping study to evaluate present and future loading requirements.  Based on future plant increases and aging electrical infrastructure, the study recommended the installation of two (2) new, fully redundant 138–13.8 kV transformers and a new 13.8 kV switchgear line-up.

A design-build RFP was issued and Dynamo was awarded the project.  The scope of work included the removal of three (3) existing transformers and the integration design of two (2) new 43 MVA transformers.  Dynamo fabricated and supplied a new E-house complete with new 13.8 kV switchgear.

A protection design philosophy was created using a combination of IEEE Standards, SaskPower requirements, and Yara preferences.  Redundant protection for the new transformers and a new protection interface between SaskPower and Yara was also designed as part of this scope.  Three (3) new protection panels for the interface were designed, built, and bench-tested by Dynamo.  All multi-function protection relays, including SEL587 and SEL787, were commissioned with an Omicron CMC356 using automated test plans.
